Bridge of Dreams

I mean the book by Anne Bishop, third installment of the Ephemera series, the second part being Belladonna and the first being Sebastian. To be honest, I read Sebastian the year it was released and no longer remember anything about it. Nothing, I remember the main characters but other than that, I can no longer tell you what it is about. I remember a few events from Belladonna but I don't recall all of them due to the length of time that was released between each book. Then the third one was released in 2012 when the previous two came out in 2006 and 2007. So Bridge of Dreams is about Belladonna's brother Lee who is Sebastian's second cousin, who is a bit upset about the events that took place in Belladonna (book 2), and in fact has come to fear his sister and the dark power she wields. However Lee ends up being taken to another part of the world, Ephemera, he has never been to and becomes blinded by men who wanted to hurt his sister and possibly his mother as well. In his selfless act of heroism, he is held prisoner and is given drugs to make him act insane then the villains enter him into the Asylum. The Asylum is what it is, an asylum, some of the patients there are truly crazy, some aren't.

The Keeper of the Asylum (the guy who runs the place) was just given this position and has never been to it before. He is a Shaman, kind of a spiritual guide you can say, but Shamans have a strange power to read the hearts of other people so they always know when someone is lying or being insincere (they're like mind readers but they can't actually read minds) and this particular Shaman named Danyal is especially gifted. Danyal is introduced in Chapter 2 and is a new character although he was in the Nook exclusive, The Voice, but his name was never actually said. Danyal is from and lives in a city called Vision where you can only find what you can see, it's unique because Vision is a rather large city but not everyone can actually see certain parts of it and some people can't find the city at all. It isn't hidden, there are no "shields" or defense mechanism protecting it from outsiders but you have to want what's in it to actually find what you're looking for. I like that concept, to me it sounds like the city will never be boring since you can only get to the districts you want or need at the moment so you can spend years in one section and never step foot in the others until you need something or someone from it which to me keeps the experience of living in Vision new.

Anyway, something dangerous has come to Vision and is making entire streets disappear from everyone's sight (and is causing massive chaos), including the Shamans who pretty much run the place. They take it as a bad omen and send Danyal to find some answers at the Asylum where he meets Lee. Lee at first seems like the typical insane patient but then they discover that he's from another part of the world and Lee has a special gift too. He is a Bridge, he can connect different parts of the world to each other using pretty much anything as a bridge to cross over, hence his title. To make it easier to understand for those who never read this series, Lee basically could connect New York City to L.A and all people would need to do is walk over what looks like an ordinary bridge, they could travel thousands of miles from NYC to LA in only a few seconds. That is his power. However he is very much blind when he gets left at the Asylum by the villains and he knows nothing about this city.

Danyal at first doesn't really believe anything Lee says about his work as a Bridge but he's willing to listen. Certain things Lee says makes an odd sense to Danyal who really can't describe it since odd things have been happening to him personally and he desperately wants Lee to be the one who can save the city, Lee can't of course, but he does know someone who can. There is another new main character, Zhahar, who comes from a unique race of humans that have been branded as demons, so of course she has some major trust issues but so does her two sisters, Zeelah and Sholeh. She's attracted to Lee instantly (even though she was attracted to Danyal too) but she is a Handler who works at the Asylum so they can't become anything more for various amount of reasons. I'm disappointed that Danyal never gets a love interest because out of all three (4 if you count the exclusive short story for the Nook) books he was my favorite character. I thought Zhahar would have been it but she went and fell in love with Lee.

Danyal, to me, doesn't get the credit he deserves for protecting Lee and Zhahar and her sisters. Danyal ends up injured and unknowingly walks over a bridge that transports him to the Den of Iniquity which is Sebastian's home and territory. So he meet's Belladonna first but his problem (wanting to save his home city and get rid of the unseen villains) doesn't get dealt with until the near very end, after we go through Zhahar's issues when her mother comes in which is the most annoying chapters in the entire book. Chapter 25 on, made me want to quit because of Zhahar and her mom's whining and bitching but I stayed to see what would happen to Danyal. The entire time of those chapters my only reaction was, "shut up Zhahar you and your mom! I wanna see Danyal, he's still hurt and people are being murdered in his city, get to Danyal! Grrr..." To me, Danyal had the bigger problem. Danyal is a character I idolized for his patience, understanding and genuinely good nature but he isn't gullible or an idiot, he was smart enough to recognize that Belladonna had more experience and practice than he despite that he's older than she is and he becomes her pupil because they have the same exact power but they manifest it in different ways. Danyal also had a bit of a temper and had some real darkness in his heart but he's not the villain nor does he become one. I want to see a continuation of the story, mainly because I feel like Danyal deserves to have a love interest. I re-read this for a second time recently and had to write a little something for it and my like of Danyal's character.
